The second day of FOSDEM was as great as the day before. I first talked with Josselin from fedora-fr who is a translation memories addict and how we could try to have them into the translation process to improve the translation quality. However, it seems it would need lots of time and resources to have something efficient and fluent. Translation memories can be vulgarised as a translation with real time advice. "This word was translated that way in the same file". This would definitely help to have something more coherent.

I could also talk with CentOS French community leader about how we could share our feodra-fr French server, Borsalino, with them to create a highly visible CentOS community. They are still interested in, but are a bit reluctant and afraid to lose the soul of a quality and advanced community.

During this day, there was also a meeting about the state of translation inside Fedora. Well, we could talk for ever about the quality of translation inside Fedora, but we were more talking about infrastructure, about how it is possible to make the lives of translators better and how they could focus on translation and not on all the technical aspects that translating Fedora requires. That's what Dimitris Glezos tries to do inside the Fedora Project and it is successful for the moment.

It was a great day for my laptop as well, as it power adapter broke into pieces. I was very sad because I think I am quite a careful person with computers. It was a pain to see all these sparks on the power adapter. Well power adapter, I loved you so much, you travelled so much with me and thank you for all the great moments you provide to me and my laptop.

I'm so excited about it! Wow dudes ! We did it! Fedora-fr association was born! I'm really excited about all the stuffs we want to achieve through this for Fedora! Thanks everyone for the support, the involvement and the enouragement! Thank you so much everybody :)

All the French Fedora Team is glad to announce you the creation of the association of the French speaking Fedora users.

We will need your help to drive this project where all the users of Fedora are working for the same goal, the promotion of Fedora.

Why an association ?
* In order to promote Free software in general and the Fedora distribution in particular. This promotion will lead to the creation of support for the Fedora promotion, from simple flyers to CD/DVD for the installation of Fedora.
* To support our website, one of the most important tool for the French community.
* An association helps to increase the presence of the French community and gives more weight to his talk, indeed an association has more credibility in front of its partners, ie Fedora project, Red Hat or others.

You should notice that the association has no link with the Fedora project itself or Red Hat. The project has been informed of the creation of the association but did not encourage it or support it in any way.

What are the goals of the association ?

* Promote free software around a central element: the GNU/Linux distribution Fedora.
* Promote Fedora on different associations and events or meetings.
* Create a network integrating users and developers of the Fedora GNU/Linux distribution.

What are our resources ?

* The French ambassador team, localized all around France, involved in different Linux User Group and other association.
* The dues from our members.
* The sell of goodies (T-shirts, mugs, hat...) should financially help to the association.

OK, here is a mail to respond to several topics which seems to be in many people minds.

First, let me re-introduce you the Fedora-fr Community, the "Who-are-you" question.

Fedora-fr.org is a community website whose aim is to promote Fedora. It is lead mostly by active Ambassadors. It is made of a forum, several mailing lists, an IRC channel on Freenode and a local documentation project. There are at the moment more than 9000 members subscribed to our forums. On these forums, we help people if they have problems and questions about the distro, obviously, but we also help people creating their own RPM to help them participating into Fedora Extras. We have also about 15 people contributing to the local documentation project. Fedora-fr is also the area where French Ambassadors are altogether. There are 13 active ambassadors. On Sundays, they meet themselves to discuss the promotion of the distro at a local scale, but also the main decisions taken by the Project in general.

What are you doing?

We are actively promoting the distribution. How are we doing this ? First, we created a strong community website. People can share their thoughts about Fedora, with the forums, the IRC or the blog platform. Finally, Ambassadors and involved people also go to different events. They first met during a big install party which happened in October 2006. And this year, Fedora was officially represented by some ambassadors (6) at the biggest Linux event in France, Linux Solutions. Some French Ambassadors (3) also went to FOSDEM to meet European Ambassadors and worldwide involved people.

What is this Fedora-fr Organisation thing?

First, I need to explain to you how we came to this idea. There were first requests from French people to be able to give Fedora some money. They couldn't, as the Project does not accept gifts due to legal issues. Then, there were several misunderstandings and little organisation (from both side it seems), and we were invited to create our materials locally. As nobody here wanted to spend its own money for it, we decided that a non-profit organisation was a very good thing to do: it would allow us to create our own materials and to be recognised as a fully organised and legal entity both by the Fedora Project and RedHat.

FOSDEM is over, let's come back to a week end with friends.

Saturday

I left home at 7h10 in the morning, to meet Johan, his girlfriend and Franck in Lille at 8h30. My car was over loaded when we left to Brussels. We arrived at 10h30 after we got lost in Brussels's streets for about 45 min. I really want to thank maps, Brussels and its undrivable paved streets. A Peugeot 107 is far from being a 4x4.

Once we were there, everything was nearly ready, and as Max said, there were few to do on the booth. It is one of the rare moment I saw as many ambassadors in the same room. We were about 20 when we take into account all the Fedora addicts around the booth. I did not help that much on the booth, I admit it. I preferred to let people who were motivated to do so and who don't have to opportunity to be be in the front line. Moreover, we had our glory hours during last month Linux Solutions in Paris.

I also spent a lot of time chatting. With French people first, who came for the occasion, we confirmed some choices we did for the French website. Some suggestions were submitted as well about the general organisation of the non-profit association. I also chatted a lot with Chitlesh Goorah about the way we could manage to have people from European countries to work all together, in the same direction. A lot of topics were talked about on this issue.This creates a lot of opportunities, of things to test and explore to promote for the distribution and free and open source software. With Dimitri Glezos, Bart Couvreur and Damien Durand, about Fedora translation effort : we had a hellish plan, i.e. create a wish list of and give it to Max the next day.

I also attended some conferences, about CentOS and Fedora of course.

On the evening, at the restaurant, we could talk globalisation of the French documentation. Dimitri made a simple statement : we have, on fedora-fr.org, a very complete documentation, of an impressive quality (yes, I'm praising our local documentation team). However, how bad it is not to have it in English, so it could help many other people in the community. Maybe could it be possible to translate some articles or howtos and to participate to the official Documentation Project? This is clearly something we have to think about and that we will have to achieve a day or another.

Sunday

Sunday was a shorter day, but I had lots of contacts as well. Why was it shorter ? Because we arrived at 12h30, half an hour before my talking about the French Community (I will give the presentation file soon, I want to had details in it). There were lots of questions about how visible we were, a thing that we will have to explore in details, as we will have to involve massively in communication (inside and outside the Project) and to participate actively in forums and news websites for example.

During the afternoon, we continued with Chtilesh to talk about the union of the European Fedora Community.

Then we explained our ideas and point of view about translation to Max. Dimitri is highly involved in this purpose and I would like to thank him for this effort.

I would like to talk about what we heard of fedora-fr as well. How are we seen from the outside ? What do foreign people think about us ? This is with an extreme pleasure and a lot of honour that we are seen as the most active European community. Our website... no, YOUR website makes a lot of people envious, as well as the French Documentation, the non-profit organisation and the future webstore (with the t-shirt that was created during the contest we organised few months ago).

At the end of the event, we shared the remaining DVDs. I got 73 Fedora Core 6 i386 DVDs and I mailed the interested French ambassador to give them away during upcoming French events.

I would like to add that it was a real pleasure to shake the hands of the most influential people worldwide and in the distro. Seeing and speaking to Max Spevack, was, wow ! Max was very studious as he had taken many notes about problems, thoughts and wishes.

Just know that it motivated much more than I was before. Roll on next Fosdem !
